Overview of Safe Handling of Medication

Qualification aims and objectives

This qualification aims to help learners develop:

  • A general understanding of different types of medication and their use
  • Knowledge of the procedures for obtaining, storing, administering and disposing of medication
  • An understanding of legislation and the audit process related to medication and issues of responsibility and accountability
  • An understanding of the record-keeping process for medication.

This is a knowledge-based qualification; achievement will not allow learners to be considered occupationally competent in the administration of medication.

This unit provides the learner with knowledge and understanding in relation to medication and prescriptions.

Supply, storage and disposal of medication

This unit provides the learner with knowledge and understanding in relation to the supply, storage and disposal of medication.

Understand the requirements for the safe administration of medication

This unit provides the learner with knowledge and understanding in relation to the requirements for the safe administration of medication.

Record keeping and audit processes for medication

This unit provides the learner with knowledge and understanding in relation to record-keeping and audit processes for medication.

Eligibility

Location

Been in the UK or EU for three years for purposes other than study.

Age

19+ at the start of the academic year.

Qualifications

  • Not on an apprenticeship.
  • Not completed any part of the course before.
  • 19-23-year-olds must have a level 2 or higher prior to attainment.
